The East London Performing Arts Society (ELPAS) is gearing up to showcase an exciting and extravagant show called In Cabaret at the Alexander Playhouse in May.

The show will feature performances inspired by world renowned cabaret venues, including the Moulin Rouge, Crazy Horse Saloon and the Folies Bergère. The production will also feature music from cabaret legends such as Edith Piaf, jazz legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and musical theatre legends such as Julie Andrews, among many others.

With visual direction from seasoned performer, Nasine van Rensburg Boltt, the show promises to be a spectacular display of music and dance.

“What we’re doing is bringing a fullscale cabaret show to the Alexander Playhouse theatre which includes everything from showgirls to specialty acts to vocals to jazz. It’s just a full-scale cabaret show that has not been seen on the East London stages, at least not in the last 10 years,” Van Rensburg Boltt said.

ELPAS production manager Christopher Pautz, who is also one of the performers in the show, shared some insight on what audiences can expect from the show.

“This show has really pushed me to new limits that I would not have known I was capable of. Working with Nasine has been such an eye-opener as she has unlocked a new found love of performing and helped me grow as a vocalist and a dancer; which I am not very fond of dancing.

“She has done this not only for myself, but countless others through the years. In this show, we have such an amazing group of people that have come together to make magic happen on stage that we get to share with the community,” Pautz said.

The production includes 23 cast and crew members, which also includes sound, light and costume designers.

Gaia Signorile, a vocalist and dancer who has been a part of ELPAS for many years now, said she was always amazed at the talented and fun people she got to perform with.

“The best part about these shows is the relationships that you build and the memories you make, but also being able to share our talent with East London.

“After being a part of the ELPAS shows for the past few years, I am always amazed at the new talented and fun people that join. This cabaret show is going to be amazing and the muscle pains and the bruises will all be worth it in the end,” she said.

The show will run from May 2-4 and each show will open at 6pm. Tickets are available at Lee Gold Music at R100 per ticket, cash only.

The Alexander Playhouse offers cabaret seating which means guests can bring their own snacks and drinks.
