Artist puts recycled materials into focus

Exhibition includes vases, bowls, craft items

For the last few years, Beatrice McGuire has been on a mission to get more people, especially young children, into recycling.

On Friday April 26, she hosted a recycling exhibition at John Bisekker hostel in Parkside, where arts and crafts made from recycled materials were on full display.

The exhibition included various items such as vases, decoration pieces, bowls and other arts and crafts items. These items were made from glass bottles, empty toilet paper rolls, plastic containers and bottles, paper and boxes.

Through her organisation, Beaty’s Recycle Arts and Crafts, McGuire has been teaching young children about the importance of recycling and showing them creative ways to use and reuse recyclable items.

“Our aim is to showcase the beauty and cost implications of recyclable art and also keeping the community clean. We hope this exhibition will bring awareness to the fact that any junk or raw materials can be used and turned into profit or art, especially in our communities where they are exposed to lots of junk.

“It is also a healing modality for me spiritually, as I am going through an awakening because this is my passion and calling,” McGuire said.

The community of Parkside fully supported the exhibition, with many children showing an interest in the displays.

“We work with the disadvantaged children and the reason for this is to inspire them and let them know that anything can be turned into art. For the elderly, we just want them to relax their minds. Our other mission is to bring awareness to dumping,” McGuire said.
