This week, we chat to Kirsti Burrows about her brilliant meal solution of microwavable meals under her brand K’s Kitchen.
Q: What service or product do you provide?
A: I offer catering services, mainly ready cooked frozen meals, platters & table spreads.
Q: What prompted the idea and who is your target market?
A: I’ve always been an extremely busy person, so for full-time working moms, I knew it would just make life so much easier. Pensioners are also able to afford a nutritious meal without having to stand for hours preparing.
Q: Where did you learn your cooking skills?
A: I am 100% self-taught. I was 18 years old when I learned how to fry an egg. I was a bit of a spoilt brat growing up.
Q: How do you come up with your different recipes?
A: I am an extremely fussy eater and love experimenting with new flavours.
Q: What are some of your most popular dishes so far?
A: Beef lasagna, beef stew & cottage pie.
Q: How many people do you work with?
A: Only myself. Sometimes I cook for 16 hours a day.
Q: What satisfaction do you get out of cooking your dishes and selling them to people?
A: To receive the amazing feedback from my clients and to know that most of my clientele is via referral is a great feeling.
Q: Are there any challenges that you have encountered so far?
A: The sudden price hikes in food sometimes make it very challenging to keep my prices affordable but so far so good.
Q: What are some of the goals or future plans that you have for your business?
A: Future goals would definitely be to have K’s Kitchen frozen meals stocked in more outlets so that they are readily available.
Q: What advice do you have for someone who is also interested in starting their own business?
A: Perseverance is key! When things look tough keep pushing.
Q: Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?
A: All my meals are freshly frozen, using only the best quality ingredients, no shortcuts taken. All containers are microwave friendly, making it that much more convenient.
