A small-town vet gets stuck in a traffic jam with a difference
I am a mixed-practice vet who works in Moorreesburg and Darling (the two practices are owned by Tygerberg Animal Hospital), so I’m often on the road between the two towns and visit farms in this district regularly.
Today I was on the dirt road between the two towns, on my way to do fertility tests on a client’s rams. I was in a hurry, but had to stop for a flock of lambs being herded from their camp to the farmyard on Vyekraal.
Suddenly I realised how blessed I am, because I would rather get held up by a flock of pretty, fat lambs than in the city’s peak traffic.
Our farmers are suffering because of the current drought, but I feel so privileged to be part of this incredible landscape – to live in the Swartland, where people still care for one another and know where their help comes from.
