Pizza… over the coals!

-

Summertime is braai time, and what better than a braai on which you can also cook pizzas? That’s what you’ll get from the Gecko Grill Pizza, which was developed by a group of engineers from Sasolburg in the Free State.

“Whereas the best engineers in the rest of the world are focusing their energy and brain power on how humans are going to reach Mars, we decided to focus on something more important: when we’re finally on Mars, how are we going to braai?” says Cobus Raubenheimer, one of the team leaders.

They developed several braai sets that can be wall-mounted – hence the name Gecko Grill. But then one of them thought: life on Mars without pizza? No ways! And so the Gecko Grill Pizza was born. And it’s built to last, because only stainless and duplex steel are used in the manufacturing.

You can still cook a piece of wors or some chops on the grill. It’s even height-adjustable and you definitely don’t need an engineering degree to turn it into a pizza oven. Simply build your pizza on a dough base, which you place on a separate plate, then bake the underside of the pizza for eight minutes over 16 briquettes. The next step is to use the handle to lower the plate to the “oven” below the coals to cook the pizza for another eight minutes, and voilà, dinner is served! (You can also bake a potato dish in the oven while cooking your steak on top.)

Now that’s what we call nifty.
