To the Malutis!
We love South Africa and its neighbouring countries so very much, and often tour places in the countryside where we are able to find peace and enrich our souls. For our 48th wedding anniversary, my husband, Nols, and I headed for the central Drakensberg and sections of the magnificent Maluti Mountains. We could not have chosen a better spot than Highlands Mountain Retreat. At 2 200 m above sea level, this SANParks resort is among the best of its kind in South Africa and truly beautiful.
We stayed over in a neatly furnished log cabin, of which the roof was covered in verdant grass – really unique. And we just about drank in the scenery, as the resort lies snugly in the foothills of the Malutis in the Eastern Free State.
We were extremely lucky to get to visit our favourite nest in summer and in icy winter conditions. During the latter, the fireplace is a major consolation, because up there it can get bitterly cold. We sat on the carpet in front of the hearth and enjoyed delicious red wine and glühwein – we even picnicked there and basked in the firelight until late at night.
In summer the evenings are lovely and mild; we spent hours lying on the green grass on the roof, chatting and admiring the night sky. Billions of stars winked at us evening after evening, and every now and then we picked one and made a wish. Wonderful memories.
There is loads to do and see in the surrounding area. You need not be bored for one moment. We did all the hiking trails – winding paths up and down the mountain. Not always easy going, but oh, so enjoyable. At many of the streams we refreshed our tired feet before setting off again. Yes, we whined and complained, but it was a delight.
Then there are many farms that are open to the public. Most of them offer bed-and-breakfast accommodation, and at one you can go horse-riding in the spectacular mountainous landscape. Something you don’t see very often any more is a bowling green – but on one of the farms we enjoyed playing a game on a well-maintained lawn.
Clarens, Fouriesburg and Meiringskloof always form part of our trips. We absolutely love the art village Clarens. We have stayed over in several guest houses here, but our favourite is Tante Anna’s guest house – it is a proper farmhouse with some of the most attractive and interesting pieces of furniture.
Back in our cosy spot in Highland we would sit on the stoep after a day’s exploring and admire the wonderful sunset. When the sun goes down in a sea of crimson, the landscape stretching out before us would be filled with golden reflecting windows…
Remember your walking stick, sunglasses, hiking shoes, hat, camera and binoculars. And always take a thin pull-over, even in summer, because it does get chilly that high up in the mountains. In winter it is best to pack your warmest cap, a scarf and a lightweight winter jacket. Enjoy this area to the fullest, and the same applies to your life!
