Roots and all

-

These eye-catching propagation stations by woodworking business Minimaal en Mooi can be used to spruce up any corner of your home. All you need to do is pour water into the glass tube, then place the stem of any house plant inside. Position the tube in a spot than receives sufficient light but doesn’t bake in the sun, then watch the plant develop roots until it is ready to be transplanted.

“Minimaal en Mooi offers the largest variety of propagation stations in South Africa,” says Ronen Fearnhead, who owns this Nelspruit-based business. “All woodwork is done by hand, and alternative wood sources, such as cutoffs from large factories, are used for the propagation stations. We have adapted our entire business to make use of wood that otherwise would end up at the rubbish dump.”

Ronen says they came up with the idea for the stations because they love house plants, and plants are even more attractive when displayed in water. “Some plants, such as the philodendron, flourish in water. It’s also easy to care for plants in these propagation stations. There’s no need to wonder whether or not they require watering, because you notice as soon as the water level drops. You will also be able to see if the roots are healthy, and it’s wonderful to watch the plant develop and soon produce even more plants.

“Each time you prune your house plants, place some of the cuttings in the glass tubes and a few weeks later you will have a baby plant ready for transplanting. I love the simplicity of this process and being able to watch nature at work.”
