The landscape here, characteri­sed by dolerite koppies and open plains, is ancient and fossil-rich. On the Fossil Trail (400 m) in the rest camp, you can see the petrified skeleton of a baby bradysauru­s.

DO THIS: The best place to take in the view is the Rooiwalle lookout point at the top of the 3 km-long Klipspring­er Pass. You’re allowed to get out of your vehicle – one of only a few places where this is permitted in the park. Daily conservati­on fee: R60 per adult; R30 per child aged 2 – 11; free with a Wild card.

Main rest camp: Camping (with power) from R345 p.n. for two people; R100 per extra adult; R50 per extra child aged 2 – 11 (max six people per stand). Chalets (sleep two to four people) from R1 515 p.n. for two people; R450 per extra adult; R225 per extra child aged 2 – 11. Cottages (sleep three to six people) from R1 655 p.n. for two people; R450 per extra adult; R225 per extra child aged 2 – 11. Breakfast is included in all rates.

Afsaal Cottage (sleeps two adults and two children) from R1 045 p.n. for two people; R132 per child aged 2 – 11.

Embizweni Cottage (sleeps seven) from R1 310 p.n. for four people;

R263 per extra adult; R132 per extra child aged 2 – 11.
