“The Kgalagadi is a very popular park with limited places to stay – make sure you book far in advance to avoid disappoint­ment.

Try to get a booking at Nossob first, as its central position is a good pivot for the rest of your itinerary.

“Besides the wonderful sightings of lion, cheetah and (less commonly) leopard, also look for smaller predators like African wildcat, honey badger and caracal. The Kgalagadi is the best place in South Africa to photograph raptors like bateleur, martial eagle and black-chested snake-eagle.

“A unique experience is to watch flocks of Namaqua sandgrouse crowd in to drink at a waterhole like Cubitje Quap, while lanner falcons swoop in hunting them.”
