How to get there?

The turn-off to Gamkaskloof is at the top of the Swartberg Pass about 50 km from Oudtshoorn. ( The Prince Albert side of the pass is closed following a flash flood in autumn.) The road to Gamkaskloof is 37 km long and takes up to two hours to drive. At the bottom, it’s another 5,5 km to Fontein Guest Farm.

Where to stay?

There are several self-catering options at Fontein. Meals are available at the restaurant. • Camping: Piet se Staning has camping stands and two ablution blocks with LED lights, hot water and flush toilets. R200 per stand per night for up to six people. • Safari camp: This camp has four tents each with two beds and linen, plus a communal braai area and a kitchen with a fridge, a stove and cutlery. The ablution facilities have hot water. R200 per person. • Houses: Annetjie Joubert grew up in a house called Oupa Piet Mostert. It sleeps six people and has solar-powered lights, a gas stove and a braai area with firewood. R250 per person. Pietjie and Hester Swanepoel house sleeps five. There’s no solar power so you have to use candles. The kitchen has a gas stove and there are braai facilities with firewood. R250 per person. Hendrik se Huisie is a small cottage that sleeps two. It has LED lights and braai facilities with firewood. R350 per person. Die Kliphuis is far from the others and sleeps four. The house has solar-powered lights, a gas stove, a big fireplace in the kitchen and braai facilities. R350 per person.

Where to eat?

The restaurant serves breakfast from 7 am until 10 am. It’s a farm breakfast with fresh bread and coffee or tea (R85 per person). Book beforehand for lunch or dinner. Dinner R100 – R160 per person, usually featuring Karoo mutton, sweet potatoes, roast potatoes and vegetables.
