Butterfly’s Bistro, Hogsback

go! - - In Brief - – Jon Minster

The mountain village of Hogsback is magical at any time of the year: Thunderstorms feed forest waterfalls in spring and summer; in autumn, every second tree explodes into fiery reds and oranges; snow falls regularly in winter. Butterfly’s Bistro is just off the main road (R345) near the southern end of the village. Depending on what the weather gods are up to, you can sit outside in dappled shade or inside near the fireplace. Breakfast ranges from a no-nonsense egg-and-bacon roll (R40) to the Full Monty (R80) – eggs, bacon, beef chipolatas, grilled tomato, mushrooms, crispy potato wedges… There are also vegetarian and vegan options (veggie schnitzel, spinach and mushrooms, with or without feta and an egg; from R70). For lunch, you can tuck into a chicken prego with wedges and a salad (R85) or one of their locally famous pizzas. We can recommend the Veggie Delight with red peppers, basil pesto, spinach and artichokes (R110). There are also burgers, wraps and snack boards, as well as two kids’ options: mini pizza with bacon and cheese (or just cheese) and chicken strips with wedges (both R55). Warm up with a cappuccino or find a patch of sun on the lawn and sip a craft beer or a glass of wine. There’s space for the kids to run around, which gives you space to just… be. Where? Off the R345 on the left as you come into Hogsback from the Alice direction (GPS: S32.59809 E26.93844). Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm (closed on Mondays).
