Good to Know

With this map of the Tankwa Karoo and the Roggeveld escarpment, master cartographer Peter Slingsby has charted an area that has been in need of a good map for years. The map covers the area from the western Cederberg to Sutherland, and from Touws River to Calvinia in the north. We’ve done several stories about the Tankwa Karoo over the years and creating a map has always been a struggle because so many of the roads in the area aren’t marked on the official government 1:50 000 map. In a way, this added to the romance of travelling in the Tankwa: the lack of info, the patchy cellphone reception… You could still get lost out there. Not any more. Slingsby has charted every dirt road, koppie, mountain range, place to stay, bush camp, pass and dry riverbed. As always, the routes he deems most scenic are marked with a smiley face. The Tankwa might have become less mysterious, but it’s still a fantastic travel destination. And now you know exactly which 4x4 track to take from the Cederberg… Cost: R190 at slings; also in outdoor shops.
