go!

That ferry looks familiar

-

I recently picked up go! #136 in a waiting room and I came upon the letter by Barend la Grange about his experience of travelling on the MV Liemba on Lake Tanganyika. My wife and I sailed on the same vessel when it was still the steam ship SS Liemba – back in 1960! At the time we were working for the East African Railways and Harbours Corporation. On that trip we travelled nearly 4 000 miles per steam ship, train and road. We sailed from Mpulungu in Zambia to Kigoma in Tanzania. At the time, the Congo was at war and hundreds of people were fleeing across the lake in whatever watercraft they could find, to escape the troubles. Some arrived on the Tanganyika side in row boats wearing nothing but their night clothes. I will never forget seeing a mountain of copper ingots on the wharf at Kigoma. The copper had been hurriedly brought out of the Congo to avoid it falling into the wrong hands. It sat there on the wharf, unattended. Being the only passengers aboard the ship, we were treated like royalty and given the finest of whatever was available. The two people on the menu are supposed to be me and my late wife.
