7 THINGS TO DO

-

See the southernmost tip of Africa

For a panoramic view, climb to the top of the Cape Agulhas lighthouse – it’s worth the 71 steps. Make sure you hold onto your hat and sunglasses if the wind is blowing. Also visit the museum to see photos of how the lighthouse has transformed over the years. From the lighthouse it’s a short stroll along the boardwalk to the cairn at the southernmost tip of Africa. On the way there you can also see the new Agulhas Icon, an installation by landscape artist Strijdom van der Merwe, which was unveiled in 2017. It’s a big, metal topographical depiction of the African continent, with landmarks like Kilimanjaro, the Drakensberg and Table Mountain (see photo on p 4). Walk around – it’s a nice, graphic way to orientate yourself. Cost: Museum and lighthouse R31,50 per adult; R15,50 per child under 12. Open daily from 9 am to 4.30 pm. Explore Agulhas National Park

There are two hiking trails: The Rasperpunt circular trail and the Two Oceans trail. Rasperpunt (5,5 km) starts at the Meisho Maru shipwreck near the lighthouse; Two Oceans consists of three loops of 3 km, 4,5 km and 10,5 km respectively, and starts in the rest camp. If you want to overnight in this pristine wilderness, there are several accommodation options available. Chalet accommodation from R1 231 per night for two adults, plus R132 per extra child (each unit sleeps four). Cost: Conservation fee R43 per adult; R22 per child. At the end of each month they host wine tastings by different cellars. The deep red walls and stylish decor create a special atmosphere – you’ll feel out of place in your flip-flops and sarong. Opening times: Monday to Friday from 8 am to 7 pm (October to April); Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm (May to September); Saturdays from 9 am to 5 pm and Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm (year-round). ?? ?? PEAK TRAFFIC (above left). The paved road separating the Agulhas lighthouse from the southernmost tip of Africa can get quite busy. Rather park at the lighthouse and walk down to the water.
