1 020 km

-

This is how far a lesser flamingo flew – on a single journey. In 2016, the Endangered Wildlife Trust fitted 12 flamingos with GPS devices to learn more about the flight patterns of these endangered birds. One of the flamingos, called Kucki, flew 1 020 km between Mozambique and Madagascar in just under 24 hours, and then spent two years on the island. She returned in May 2018, travelling 927 km in a single flight. On her return flight, Kucki took off from the same spot, at the mouth of the Mangoky River, where she had landed in 2016.
