PANORAMA ROUTE, BLYDE RIVER CANYON

Get high on views

-

Wow. Yoh. Sjoe! The Panorama Route in Mpumalanga runs along the northeastern tip of the Drakensberg escarpment, where the Highveld steps down into the Lowveld. There are five waterfalls, five viewpoints and other sights like Bourke’s Luck Potholes, a glass lift at Graskop and a shoe-shaped guesthouse you can stay in next to the R36 north of Ohrigstad. The entire route goes from Sabie, past Graskop to the Three Rondavels viewpoint. Don’t do it in one day because it’s too much to take in. Make a long weekend of it, so you can also visit Ohrigstad and Pilgrim’s Rest. Another reason to stay an extra day is the weather: That part of the country is a summer rainfall region and it’s often misty. If you have an extra day, you might actually see why everyone raves about God’s Window. Cost: Entrance fee at Bourke’s Luck (pictured) R55 per adult and R20 per child. TIP Most viewpoints face east so the best time to visit is late afternoon, with the sun at your back. 013 764 1177; sabie.co.za; graskop.co.za – Esma Marnewick
