KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

-

What is Silent Steps? It’s a company owned and run by Anette Grobler – a small but formidable woman. Anette is a former SANDF major with nearly a decade of experience in the army. She was one of the first-ever women selected to attempt the challenging Recce course! You’re in good hands under her care. Silent Steps is well known for its popular Shoreline of the San Hike, which starts in Elands Bay. Each year they also do a longer, more challenging hike – often a once-off experience. Keep your eyes on their website for details. Many of Anette’s hikers are return customers. It’s easy to see why.

Top packing tips: The Hantam Hike is a slackpacking walk. You carry a daypack; a sheep truck will move your camping gear from one overnight stop to the next. You’ll receive a detailed pack list when you sign up – here are some of the things I couldn’t have done without: Flask (for tea with condensed milk). I filled up with boiling water before I set out each morning. Many people brought a JetBoil stove along, to make tea en route. Karoo nights can be chilly. I took disposable hand warmers (R30 for a pair at Cape Union Mart) to warm up my sleeping bag before I crawled in. Bring shoes with open toes to wear in the evenings – to give your feet a break. Don’t underestimate what you’ll need in terms of blister precautions. However much you think you’ll need, double it. Zinc oxide plasters are a winner. Needles and thread are also necessary. Headlamp. (No brainer.) Take the best camp chair you can afford – not a tripod chair like the one I packed. After walking 20 km, you want to sit in comfort. Space on the truck isn’t a problem. Lip balm and sunscreen.

How much does it cost? This 100 km, five-day holiday is one of the cheapest around. ( Yes, it is a holiday!) In 2019, the rate is R4 800 per person, including breakfast, dinner and guesthouse accommodation on the nights you don’t camp.

Dates for 2019: 14 – 19 May. Places are filling fast! silentsteps.co.za
