DHARMENDRA WRITES: I live in Port Elizabeth but I often travel to other cities for work. On my weekly flights, I’m always keen to learn from my fellow passengers what their favourite PE attractions are. Some will dive straight into the beaches, the wrecks and penguins as the reasons they love PE. For some, it’s a great place to raise a family or it’s because it has that small-town feeling where everything is within close driving distance. Personally, I love rolling down all the windows, or getting on a bike, and breathing in that fresh sea and fynbos breeze.

I took this photo along Seaview Road, which ranks in my Top 10 of PE outdoor attractions. What else? I’d say the Sacramento Trail at Schoenmakerskop, the Sardinia Bay Parkrun (5 km; every Saturday at 8 am), the Lady’s Slipper hike (towards Uitenhage), Route 67 inner-city history walk (on which you see 67 artworks celebrating Nelson Mandela), the coastal hike from Maitland Beach to Blue Horizon Bay, the scenic drive (or cycle route) from Marine Drive to Schoenmakerskop, the Aloe Trail (at Bluewater Bay) and the Cape Recife lighthouse trail.

TOAST SAYS: Wow, thanks! Now we’ve got a to-do list for next time we’re in PE. It’s true what Dharmendra says: PE is one of those amazing cities where an escape to nature is always close by.

I like this pic because it celebrates exactly that. It shows a bunch of people enjoying the ocean and the beach. The light is quite grey, but this has resulted in a shimmer of silver in the distance, almost blurring the boundary between sea, sky and shoreline. Thanks, Dharmendra!
