At home on the road

- RUT CLOETE, Pretoria

Our family has been travelling around South Africa for the past 18 months: me, my husband Pieter and our children Charma (8) and Declan (12). We started our journey in April 2018, at my father-in-law’s farm near Newcastle in KZN, and we’ve visited so many places since then, from St Lucia to Hondeklip Bay.

How does it work? We set up a base where my husband and I can work (we do payroll administration for a few companies) and where we can home-school our children. Many self-catering units can be hired for lower rates if you stay for longer than 28 days. Our lives go on as normal, and in our free time we explore the area we’re in. We’ve seen some of the amazing places in the country in a very affordable way. We recently spent a weekend in a rondavel at Klipkloof River Camp on the banks of the White Umfolozi near Ulundi. It’s a rock climber’s paradise, and we were the only guests there. We had a great time climbing and swimming.

We always enjoy reading your magazine to get ideas, and we love it when you write about a place we’ve been to! We’re still travelling, and sharing our adventures on Instagram, Facebook and Youtube – search for @dieroetevandiecloetes.

even receive a cursory mention in your road trip feature.

It would have been almost impossible for your writers to have not passed through the town to get to the places mentioned. Perhaps there’s just too much to write about Gansbaai and space would not allow, in which case you could have at least given an indication that the town also belongs in the Overberg!

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. You make a valid point. The Classic Road Trip articles are quite challenging to compile. There are so many wonderful places to include, and we have limited space in the magazine. We trust that our article will inspire readers to explore the entire Overberg region. Hopefully we’ll be able to visit Gansbaai in the future. – Ed.

Thanks team!

I want to give a big shout-out to the writers responsible for the Classic Road Trip feature in go! #162. Thanks so much for the extensive coverage! We’re buying up the copies thick and fast, and

I’m convinced that your article will help to bring many travellers to the Overberg; visitors who will explore even further, beyond the suggestions, thereby benefiting many other establishments. FRIEDA LLOYD, Tourism manager, Overberg Municipality
