Cadaqués is magnífico

-

My wife Ans-Mari and I visited the town of Cadaqués in north-eastern Spain last year April. We wanted to run the Cap de Creus Trail, a 44 km marathon around the peninsula, but we were too late to enter. We were disappointed, but there was nothing stopping us from running a section of the route on our own…

The town of Cadaqués itself was the halfway mark of the race. It would take the elite athletes a few hours to get there, so we had more than enough time to do an out-and-back section then return to support the frontrunners.

The landscape kind of looked like the mountains of the Western Cape, minus the fynbos. The sea was beautiful, with small bays around every corner. We saw lots of stony beaches and hardly any waves – that day the Mediterranean was flatter than a farm dam.

Cadaqués used to be a small rural fishing community, but it was “discovered” by several artists in the 1930s, including Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dalí. Dalí lived in Port Lligat, a small village nearby, for most of his life – his house is now a museum.

Cadaqués is tranquil and romantic. A promenade meanders along the coast and there are lots of restaurants, shops and other places to explore. LAMBERT DE WET, Stellenbosch
