AFRICA AT ITS BEST
Cape Agulhas is the southernmost point in Africa, but if you’ve ever been there you’ll know there’s no dramatic natural feature that gives away its geographical significance – it looks like anywhere else on that part of the coast.
That’s why SA Tourism and SANParks joined forces to create the Map of Africa monument: a relief map of the continent, hand-sculpted from concrete and sprayed with different metal powders. The monument faces south and is 30 m in diameter; visitors are encouraged to walk on it and “explore” all the valleys, mountains, open plains and river courses.
It’s a great way to locate yourself and it gives extra significance to Agulhas itself, right at the tip of such an awesome land mass. Photographer Jean Tresfon took this aerial shot of the monument from his gyrocopter, during a four-hour flight over the Southern Cape in January this year.
