Mez Karoo Kitchen

-

The garden is leafy, the chairs and tables a playful red and green, the artworks are elegant and the three resident cats are full of character. You might as well be somewhere in rural Spain.

This restaurant, run by Michelle Berry and her son Kyle (pictured above), is small and intimate. Lanterns sway in the evening breeze, the music is soothing, and you can hear the clink of cutlery from the kitchen where Michelle, Kyle and Merencia Britz are hard at work.

They’re a team of three so the menu is limited – not that it’s easy to pick a dish because everything looks so good!

“The Little Karoo is very Mediterranean in its climate, even though we’re not near the ocean,” says Michelle. “We have lamb – and olives, tomatoes and aubergines grow well here, so that’s what we use to cook.”

I order a melanzane alla parmigiana with salad (R140), and make a note to order the Greek keftedes with tzatziki and baked fish next time.

The appetiser is Turkish zucchini fritters (R45) and a glass of home-made ginger beer.

They also cook Mexican dishes and even a few Cape Malay dishes like lamb shank curry and bobotie.
