Joubert-Tradauw Alfresco Deli

-

Foodies might know Beate Joubert from the Kokkedoor cooking show, or her cookery book Taste the Little Karoo. When you hang out here, you really do get a taste of the Karoo because Beate uses fresh, seasonal ingredients mostly produced on their farm.

The platters cost R250 each and there’s enough for two people: fruit like Kakamas peaches, pears and figs; freshly baked sourdough; cold meat; cheese; home-made pickles and pâtés; and delicious spanakopitas or pies.

Beate also makes burgers, gourmet sandwiches and salads – and pizzas on weekends. In winter, you can look forward to curry, oxtail and bobotie. A farmer is always busy, but if you’re lucky enough to run into Beate’s husband Meyer, he’ll tell you some anecdotes from the district: How he and Giniel de Villiers built go-karts as children, how his time as an exchange student in the Napa Valley in California convinced him that he and his dad should make their own wine rather than supply grapes to other cellars, and how you’ll seldom find more than a hectare of the same soil on the farm. “The Little Karoo has poor soil quality,” he says. “I like pinot noir and had three great harvests, but then the vineyard burnt out. Then we planted shiraz – it’s a more hardy cultivar and the wine we made from it has a lovely, classic Rhône style.”

Also taste the 2016 chardonnay – aged on the lees for 12 months – and their well-known R62 Bordeaux blend. If you eat at the Alfresco Deli, the wine tasting (hosted by Erika Winter, pictured above) is free, otherwise it’s R30 per person.

Where? 12 km west of Barrydale next to the R62. Opening times: Monday to Saturday from

9 am to 5 pm; Sundays only open for groups; book beforehand.
