WHAT ELSE?
• Spend a day or three at Oribi Gorge, 15 km inland from Port Shepstone, for hiking trails, game drives, horse rides, mountain-bike trails, a vulture restaurant and several adrenaline activities. Visit kznwildlife.com; lakeeland.co.za; leopardrockc.co.za; wild5adventures.co.za and vulturehide.blogspot. com for more information on the region.
• Visit Red Desert Nature Reserve, 10 km outside Port Edward – it claims to be the smallest desert in the world. It feels like you’re on Mars when you step onto the bright red dust patch that’s only 200 m in diameter. Apparently overgrazing by cattle resulted in the desertification, but no one knows for sure. R35 per adult; R20 per child.
