GARDEN ROUTE AWARDS
Three Garden Route golf resorts/ estates received international acclaim with prestige awards at the end of 2017. Fancourt was honoured twice. Most pleasing was being named Golf Resort of the Year in the Rest of the World category at the 18th IAGTO Awards in France. Fancourt was one of only three resorts worldwide – the others being Pebble Beach in California (North American winner) and Aphrodite Hills in Cyprus (European winner) – lauded by the International Association of Golf Travel Operators.
Fancourt was named South Africa’s Best Golf Hotel 2017 at the World Golf Awards (Spain), which celebrate excellence in golf tourism. Winners are chosen by the golf travel and hospitality community, and tourists, through hundreds of thousands of online ballots. This is a newer ceremony, established in 2014. “We are thrilled by this recognition,” said Peter Dros, Sales and Marketing Director at Fancourt. “We pride ourselves on our unsurpassed o erings for golfers.”
Pinnacle Point was voted South Africa’s Best Golf Course for a second consecutive year at the World Golf Awards. “To be recognised again as the golfing destination in South Africa is a huge honour,” said Carl van der Linde, General Manager of Pinnacle Point Estate. “Golfers are spoilt for choice when it comes to quality courses in beautiful settings in South Africa, so to be declared the best is high praise indeed,” said Golf Director Nic Grundtvig.
In 2017, Pinnacle Point completed several new developments as part of its 10-year anniversary, including a revamp of the existing clubhouse, pro shop and restaurant, construction of a new golf cart barn, function venue and wellness centre. “Our facilities are rst-rate, the views from every tee sensational and the gol ng experience exceptional,” says Grundtvig.
Morocco was declared Africa’s Best Golf Destination, ahead of South Africa, Egypt and Kenya. Portugal was the World’s Best Golf Destination for the fourth year in a row, with the Old Course at St Andrews named the World’s Best Course.
Pezula Golf Club in Knysna achieved an Honourable Mention as part of the Platinum Clubs of the World (5-star clubs of excellence), in the Golf & Country Club category.The Top 100 Clubs and 75 Honourable Mentions comprise the top one percent of all private clubs worldwide.
“Pezula has gone through di cult times in the past, and one of the criteria of this achievement was the ability to turn the club around and into a healthy pro t situation,” said Pezula club chairman Albert McLean. Leopard Creek was ranked No 74 among the Top 100 Clubs – Augusta National was No 1 -- and Royal Johannesburg & Kensington also received an Honourable Mention.
