CASEY JARVIS Ekurhuleni Open, State Mines GC Scores: 61-70-64-66 (261)

Runner-up: Deon Germishuys 67-6773-65 (272)

How he did it: The 15-year-old prodigy had 30 birdies on his home course in Brakpan in posting the second lowest total by a South African amateur. His opening 61 (30-31) included 11 birdies. He birdied 14 different holes for an eclectic score of 58. Runner-up Germishuys (Strand) had 23 birdies and an eagle.

Notable: While Jarvis has won the SA U-15 and U-17 titles this year, plus the Africa Junior Open, this was his first big one at senior level. This year has seen three notable scoring blitzes, the first by Kyle McClatchie in the Gauteng North Open (263) and then by Swede Oliver Gillberg in the SA Strokeplay (261). The 11-shot margin of victory by Jarvis is second to Albert Kruger’s 12 shots in the 2002 EK Open. The only previous 61s were by Jake Roos in the final round of the 2004 North West Open at Potchefstroom, and Matthew Carvell in the Limpopo Open final round at Polokwane in 2005.
