Q ‘The rope wedges on my new sandals are getting dirty. Any cleaning tips?’

AYou can use a foaming carpet-spot remover to brighten braided wedges without damage. First, vacuum the trim to remove loose dirt. Then lightly spray on the foam – we like Plush Supreme Carpet Spot & Stain Remover (R49,99) – wait five minutes and blot with an absorbent cloth. Repeat for stubborn grime, gently working in the foam with a baby toothbrush.

Q ‘What’s the best way to spiff up a canvas tote?’

AVacuum the bag inside and out to remove crumbs and embedded dirt. Squirt some dishwashing liquid in water and, with a clean cloth, apply the sudsy mixture to clean the bag. Use a soft brush to scrub stains and soiled areas like the handles and base. Wipe down with a damp cloth; air-dry. A protectant spray like MasterGuard Fabric Protection (R189) will keep dirt and stains away.

Q ‘Ugh! Can I get creases out of my favourite straw hat?’

AStuff your hat with tissue paper or place it over a bowl to keep it stable. With a garment steamer or an iron, gently steam the folded straw to soften it. (Don’t let it get too wet.) Use your hands to smooth it out or cover it with a towel and gently press with a warm iron. Or use a hairdryer on a warm setting to straighten and reshape the straw or dry it after steaming.
