What sets Johannesburg apart from Cape Town has always been restaurants established over many decades in areas where communities of immigrants settled. This was the foundation of Mastrantonio, owned by friends Paolo Scalla and Gianni Mariano from central Italy, when they opened in 1996. ‘The Mastrantonio philosophy is simple, based on honesty and good ingredients,’ says Paolo. ‘Where we come from, people get the most out of life and we want to try and get the most out of our ingredients.’
