Gourmet (South Africa) - - FOOD DIARIES -

Ilove local and buy local and sustainably sourced products whenever possible; I actually often get my mum to send me a Zimbabwean coffee called Farfalle that is really delicious. The one cookbook everybody should own is

Cook with Jamie (12). It’s a brilliant guide to getting into the basics.

My favourite restaurant in Africa is The Foodbarn in Noordhoek. I love Franck Dangereux’s approach to life, family and food – and you can taste his food philosophy in every bite.

I would love to meet Massimo Bottura (7). Up until a year ago I would have said Marco Pierre White but I was lucky enough to meet him at the Good Food & Wine Show earlier this year.

The top three ingredients in my fridge are a good hard cheese (1), a jar of home-made pesto and farm butter.

I can’t live without a really good, sharp knife (10). If it’s sharp enough it’s your best friend and covers all the main requirements of a basic kitchen tool.

My favourite food movie is Julie & Julia (4). Not least because I’m a die-hard Meryl Streep fan, but also because it includes so many of my favourite things, from a good dose of nostalgia to blogging to classic

French food.

Food instagrammars to follow? At the moment I’m loving @lindsaysfeast (5) and @ful.filled.

I will always be inspired by the witticisms and endlessly delicious creations of Deb Perelman at Smitten Kitchen (3) ( smittenkitchen. com). She is also the reason I first started blogging seven years ago.

Personal signature dish to cook for friends is pork belly with caramelised onions and a cider gravy (2). My go-to dish on safari is something that cooks long and slow in a potjie pot (11) – a harissa beef brisket comes to mind.

Cooking shows I love include Rachel Khoo (9),

I’m an unashamed Nigella Lawson fan and Jamie

Oliver, of course. And good old Rick Stein.

Music to cook by? Chilled French Café (6).

On my bucket list for restaurants to visit is Osteria Francescana (8). The other me lives in Italy, and this obviously ties in nicely with the Massimo Bottura goals.
