ABERDEEN — Other than a case of murder last weekend, there has been very little serious crime in Aberdeen in the last two weeks.

The murder occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning in de Jager Street, Lotusville. According to a witness, two men, who are cousins, were arguing, possibly about drugs. The younger man, 26-year-old Rhuan Amir Joy, took out a knife, and the witness then heard 32-year-old Marcos Joy cry out in pain.

The man who had been stabbed tried to run away but collapsed. He was taken to hospital by ambulance but passed away in hospital.

The suspect appeared in court on Monday, but the case was postponed until December 14 for further investigation, and for legal aid.

Two cases of reckless and negligent driving were opened.

On December 4, three passengers in a Quantum taxi were injured after a tyre burst. The vehicle was travelling from Cape Town to the former Transkei, and the accident happened on the R69, about 40km from Aberdeen.

The second case is against a police officer from Muizenburg, near Cape Town, who was on her way, with a colleague, to the Eastern Cape as part of an investigation. According to the driver, she lost control of the vehicle, a Ford Ikon, when she tried to avoid a kudu crossing the road. The accident occurred just before 06:00, on the N9 between Aberdeen and Graaff-reinet. The driver and passenger were both slightly injured when the car rolled.

There was only one reported case of housebreaking and theft in this period. On December 4, a flat screen television was stolen from a house in Marikana, Thembalesizwe. The owner of the house was not at home, as she works on a farm, and her daughter went out with friends. On the daughter’s return, she found that the front door had been forced open, and the television was missing. Acting on information received, warrant officer Welcome Tiya recovered the television.

A case of cruelty to animals has been opened against the owner of several donkeys, two of which are used to pull a cart. Photos of the animals have been taken and will be sent to a vet for an examination.

An inquest docket has been opened after a 13-year-old girl died unexpectedly on Monday. The previous week the girl had been complaining of abdominal pain, but as she had just started menstruating, it was thought that this was the cause. On Monday, she started vomiting and diarrhoea and was taken by car to the hospital.

Sadly, she was already dead on arrival. The police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination but confirmed that the girl had no signs of injury or assault.
