QUIET WEEK FOR CRIME IN ABERDEEN

ABERDEEN — An 18-year-old youth, who has previous conviction­s as well as a pending case for theft, broke into a shop in Ambraal Street, Lotusville, last Thursday.

Unknown to the youth, however, the shop, owned by a foreign national, was unoccupied. A member of the community called the police station to report that he had seen someone in the shop, and three members of SAPS responded immediatel­y. The youth was found inside the shop and arrested. He has been charged with housebreak­ing.

On Sunday, the Toyota bakkie belonging to the owner of Pub and Grub Tavern in Lotusville was broken into at about 5.35am. Someone driving past saw it happening, and allegedly called the police, who were unable to respond as they were at an accident scene. They then called the owner’s nephew, who in turn alerted his uncle, who was sleeping in the tavern. Unfortunat­ely, by the time the owner came outside, the suspect had gone. The driver’s side window was broken, and the vehicle’s radio was taken. An inquest docket was opened after the unexpected death of a 4-month-old baby boy at his home in Vink Street, Lotusville.

His mother woke up just before 01:00 and went to feed the baby, but found him unresponsi­ve. The ambulance came, but the baby was certified dead by the paramedics.
