Overturned truck causes 12h delay
GRAAFF-REINET — Traffic was backed up in both directions for several hours on Tuesday, after a truck overturned on the N9 between Graaff-reinet and Aberdeen, about 25km from Aberdeen.
The truck was lying right across the road. Cars and small delivery vehicles were able to pass on one side of the road, but dense bush on the other side prevented any vehicles passing there.
The emergency services were very concerned about the high risk of more accidents, but fortunately motorists were generally patient and further accidents were avoided. Trucks were unable to pass the accident scene until the vehicle was eventually moved.
The accident happened at about 04:20 on Tuesday morning and was reported to the police by driver Tinashe Dhiwand, who was fortunately uninjured. He was driving the furniture removal truck from Johannesburg to George, and lost control of the vehicle. No other vehicle was involved.
According to Provincial Inspector Kayster of the Traffic Department, the road was eventually reopened fully at 16:00, after the necessary equipment and breakdown service arrived from Port Elizabeth.
