Schools showcase their sport talent

-

The annual Camdeboo Classic Clashes sports event for schools in the Graaff-reinet area was held last Saturday at the Collie Koeberg Sports Complex.

Close to 1 000 learners from 13 schools took part in events ranging from rugby to chess, and spectators and competitors were treated to some exciting competition and great sportsmanship.

The event was organised by the local organising committee of the Camdeboo Classic Clashes in conjunction with the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. The event was widely publicised with posters, but to the disappointment of the organisers, it seems that these posters had all been removed, which led to a lower attendance from the community than was expected.

The schools competed in four sporting codes, as well as chess, and the honours were shared amongst the participating schools.

Graaff-reinet Primary came out on top in the U.13 rugby and netball, with Spandau Secondary winning the netball. Isibane Primary triumphed in the U.13 soccer. Asherville Secondary won the U.16 rugby and the prestigious A team U.19 rugby round-robin tournament, scoring an impressive 47-5 victory over Aberdeen Secondary.

Spandau Secondary played against a local club in the open soccer event, which they won. Asherville Secondary and Spandau Secondary were the only two schools in the U.18 volleyball competition, and Spandau came out on top in both the boys’ and girls’ events. Chess was played on an individual basis, and learners from Spandau Secondary, Ryneveld Primary and Graaff-reinet Primary took part in this tournament, in different age groups. Players from all schools performed well, and there was no overall winning school.

The main sponsor of the day was the Goldrush Foundation. Sporting trophies were donated by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, and gift vouchers from Brian Bands Sports will be awarded to the chess champions. A generous cash donation was received from Drostdy Toyota, Nedbank sponsored stationery packs and tog bags, and

Old Mutual donated water bottles and goody bags. Thanks must also go to the Department of Education which arranged transport for the participants from Nieubethesda and Aberdeen, and lunch packs for all officials and competitors.
