Pnp’s charity golf day tees off well

-

The Pick n Pay Charity Golf Day, held this past Saturday, 15 December, at the Graaffreinet Golf Club, was a roaring success.

Forty-eight players of all golfing abilities took part in this unusual format.

The combination of a Better-ball and 4-ball Alliance evoked comments such as, “Jou vyand is jou vriend” and “One moment you are hoping that your opposition drives the ball into the bushes and then you are encouraging him to sink his putt.”

The 4-ball Alliance was won by Colin Warner, Frikkie Coetzee, Ivan Daniels and Devon Valentine with 100 points.

In the Better Ball competition, golfing duo Frikkie Coetzee and Colin Warner topped the leaderboard with 48 points.

Willie Claasen and Chris Koeberg came in second with 46 points (count out), followed by Weppie Weideman and Hubri Bruyn in third place with 46 points (count out).

Nearest to the pin on holes 4 and 13 was Wally Gentry and on 6 and 15 Johnny Ludick.

The Longest Drive on 7 and 16 was Clive Ludick and on 8 and 17, Bradley Costa.

The table at the event's prizegiving ceremony was groaning under a wide variety of prizes ranging from TV sets, biltong driers, kettles and coolboxes to coathangers, carwash products, Fidget spinners and Winkies.

Every player in attendance received something. The two young ladies, Tyla Steyn and Lauren Waddelow ably handed out the prizes and the recipients got an added bonus of a hug.

The prizes allocated to the few players who were not there were auctioned off. This brought in very welcome funds, which Pick n Pay will be distributing among a number of charities they support to bring good cheer to those in need.

As the players came off the course they were welcomed by the happy sounds of a Marimba Band.

These talented young people played with such enthusiasm and enjoyment and this set a happy festive mood.

By all accounts, the three-course meal was delicious and enjoyed by all. The salmon starter was beautifully presented; the roast pork, lamb, potatoes, butternut and vegetables were cooked to perfection and the trifle just topped off a wonderful meal.

Pick n Pay owner, Cheryl Waddelow, thanked everyone for attending and celebrating their second year of opening in Graaff-reinet. She promised to make this an annual event and hopefully attract more people next year. All funds raised are for their continued charitable work.

Gold Rush has sponsored the Wednesday IPS competition throughout the year.

The Golf Club is very grateful to them. On Wednesday, 12 December, Vlam Pretorius won on 37 points, Niek Steyn came in second on 32 points and David Luscombe third on 31 points.

Eddie Nel, followed by Jacques Wagener and David Luscombe, were the winners in the Friday Sundowner competition played on 14 December.

On Saturday, 22 December, an IPS competition will be held with tee-off at 12:30 and on 29 December a Betterball competition - enter with a partner. Tee-off at 12:30.
