Last delivery has spectators on their feet

- Christo Vermaak

With the last make-orbreak ball being delivered in the final of the GraaffReinet Cricket Business League, the spectators rose to their feet as one - gripped by the tense moment.

The eight-a-side Indian Premier style league, sponsored by Octofin, started on 1 October with the final played on Friday 8 November.

Having won all their games, it was only Tyremart Duelers that stood between Wicked Bears and the much coveted trophy.

But, Tyremart Duelers gave the Wicket Bears a run for their money.

Batting first, the Tyremart Duelers managed an impressive 125 runs, challenging their opponents to better their score.

While the teams battled it out, the jovial spectators enjoyed a braai.

With four runs needed to win and the fires burning high, the crowd forgot about their culinary activities and stood captivated as Johan van Wyk of the Wicked Bears faced the last ball.

His well-struck shot sent the ball towards the line for the needed four, but was deftly cut off by Tyremart Duelers.

Winning by one run, Tyremart Duelers lifted the trophy with great joy.

Last week Saturday’s first 7am Mountain Drive parkrun in Graaff-Reinet was a hit, with 63 participants taking part. The earlier starting time, due to the Karoo heat, saw 21 new personal bests.

Five of these personal bests included the first three men to cross the finish line, as well as the second and third woman.
