Local bikers rev up against murders

- Paula-Ann Smit

Hundreds of bikers from Graaff-Reinet and surrounds gathered in this town on Saturday 29 August, to show their support in the nationwide rally against farm murders.

According to one of the organisers of the local rally, Basjan Mulder, bikers from GraaffReinet, Middelburg, Cradock and Aberdeen participated.

The bikers, representing different clubs from across the district, weren’t alone. At least 50 cars and bakkies joined the gathering. Most of the motorbikes had white crosses taped on the front, while signs such as “stop all murders” and “all lives matter” were seen on vehicles. Green ribbons were handed out to participants to wear as a show of their support.

“Our main goal is to get everyone involved to raise awareness for farm murders,” Mulder, who participated in the rally on his green motorbike, told the Advertiser. Neels Erasmus, also of Graaff-Reinet, helped organise the event. The rally started at Tyremart on Church Street, where the group gathered at around 11am.

The event kicked off with a prayer by one of the participants: “Lord, the world is on fire and now we need to be on fire for you.”

From there, the group rode around the NG Church and onto the N9 towards Middelburg. They stopped briefly outside of Graaff-Reinet, from where they returned to town.

The nationwide rally saw thousands of bikers gather at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where they laid roses and crosses at the gates.

Lord, the world is on fire and now we need to be on fire for you.
