Win big cash prizes
Time is running out for residents who still want to enter their photos for the photographic competition launched by the Graaff-Reinet Heritage Society on 1 September.
The deadline is Monday 20 September and the theme of the competition is ‘Our Heritage’. The competition aims to make the people of GraaffReinet more aware of their heritage. There will be cash prizes for the best photographs and 12 images will be selected to appear in their 2022 Graaff-Reinet Heritage Calendar, which will be available later this year. The competition is open to everyone, especially the younger generation. As the Heritage Society will be accepting photographs taken on cell phones, everyone can take and enter their photographs. Entries will be limited to five images per entrant.
Graaff-Reinet is well known for its architecture and has more monuments than any other town in South Africa. When taking photographs of the architecture, have a closer look at the details: the stonework, woodwork, brookie lase, doorways with fanlights, clock towers, chimneys, light fittings and so much more. Don’t forget about indoors. Old fireplaces, aga ovens, light fixtures, wooden beams and ceiling mouldings are also part of the town’s heritage.
Nicola Woods, a member of the Graaff-Reinet Heritage Society, says each monument has a story behind them. “See if you can express this through how you take your photographs. Not only is our heritage reflected in buildings and monuments, but dates back as far as fossils and geology, to more recently ox-wagons, old farming equipment, war medals, old furniture, windmills and antiques.”
Think out of the “wakis” and take a moment to capture these gems on camera and stand a chance to win. Not only will your photograph be in the 2022 Graaff-Reinet Heritage Calendar, but the first prize will also be R1 000 cash, the second prize R500 cash, and the third prize R250 cash.
Entries must include your full name, age (if you are under 18), your contact details and where the picture was taken. Image files must be 1MB to 3MB (72 to 300 dpi) and please keep to a maximum of five images.
