Sonia Wahl

Willem Avenant was raised in Murraysburg, where his parents own and operate the well-known Kay’s General Dealer. Avenant has embarked on a significant challenge: competing in the Dakar Rally in 2025, a feat comparable to scaling Mount Everest. He resides in New Hampshire, north of Boston, with his wife and daughter, but maintains a strong connection to Murraysburg, where they own property, and still visit regularly to train and visit family.

Formerly, Avenant satisfied his appetite for action by also lacing up his running shoes, but following an accident, he now prepares his motorcycle for rally competitions, which is his lifelong passion. Avenant finds fulfilment in organising events, spanning from running to motorcycling.

Since childhood, he has harboured a desire to participate in the Dakar Rally - a dream well known to those acquainted with him. However, fundraising is his primary challenge. He says it is a demanding juggling act to balance work, personal life, qualifying races and securing funds for Dakar participation.

To enhance his chances of success, he plans to align with a top-tier team offering support, bike repairs, sustenance and rest during the rally. Having extensively researched the Dakar over the years, Avenant shares his insights through his website, Decoding Dakar, covering topics ranging from bike selection to qualifying strategies. He emphasises community engagement and believes in reciprocation rather than mere donation. Avenant aims to inspire others and asserts that dedication can yield remarkable achievements.

During the race, he anticipates pushing his body to its limits, prioritising focus and performance. When questioned about his target finish position, he dismisses lofty aspirations and says he will be content with simply completing the race, as this underscores the transformative nature of the Dakar experience.

To secure qualification for the next Dakar Rally, Avenant will participate in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, the second round of the World Rally Raid Championship in late February. He is awaiting confirmation to qualify for the Dakar by October or November.
