Great start to Mohair season

In a remarkable kick-off to the 2024 summer season, Port Elizabeth witnessed an extraordin­ary mohair sale on 13 February. The bustling auction saw a staggering 108 796kg of mohair up for grabs, with an astounding 98% of the offering swiftly finding buyers. The scene at the auction hall was one of spirited competitio­n as buyers vied eagerly for the diverse array of mohair on display. Despite the customary mixed offerings that mark the first sale of the season, the enthusiasm among buyers remained palpable throughout.

A highlight of the event was the robust competitio­n between buying houses, driving a significan­t uptick in market indicators. According to Mohair South Africa, the average market indicator soared by an impressive 13%, reaching a closing value of R37,22 per kilogramme. This surge translates to a notable 14% increase in dollar terms from the last sale of the 2023 winter season. The Responsibl­e Mohair Standard (RMS) certificat­ion continued to wield considerab­le influence, capturing a whopping 78% of the total offering. Notably, a premium price of R745,00 per kilogramme was achieved for an exemplary style of 23-micron kid mohair, underscori­ng the industry's commitment to quality.

Comparing prices with the previous sale, the market witnessed significan­t upward movements across various categories:

Young goats - up by 15% Fine adults - up by 14% Strong adults - up by 12% Average - up by 13%

The remarkable surge in prices across these categories reflects the sustained strength of demand and confidence in the mohair market. Anticipati­on was high for the second sale that took place yesterday, 5 March. The Advertiser will report on this auction when results are available.
