Waainek wind farm nears completion

- STAFF REPORTER

The construction of the Waainek wind farm is nearing its completion, according to Innowind’s site project manager Sebastiaan Brokken.

All eight wind turbines were installed by the end of June 2015 and started feeding green energy into the Makana municipal grid at the end of August, Brokken said.

“All turbines were success- fully commissioned by Vestas, the Danish turbine manufacturer and main contractor to the project.

“The wind farm is currently undergoing various tests to ensure its compliance with applicable standards,” Brokken said.

Brokken said the Grahamstown municipal substation (located in the Highlands industrial area) was upgraded by the municipality in time to enable the facility to connect to the municipal grid.

Further basic upgrades on the Makana network were scheduled to take place at the beginning of next year, he said.

“Full commercial operations of the wind farm are expected by early January 2016.”
