Silver for rifle club hot shot

-

The Rhodes University Rifle Club recently attended the Free State Championships, held in Boemfontein, with their star performer, Graeme Schmeldt, earning an overall silver medal.

In the first match, his new personal best of 556 was good enough to earn him a bronze medal. His score of 550 in the second match, shot in challenging conditions, was however good enough to earn him a silver medal in that match. When the scores were combined, his consistency earned him an overall silver medal.

“This caps a remarkable year for Graeme, who started the year with a personal best of 508,” said James Connan of the Rhodes Rifle Club.

“He stepped up his game and averaged 542 at the Satra South African National Championships held in Bloemfontein in April this year.

“At that competition, he dominated the beginner class, winning gold in every single match and was subsequently moved up to a more competitive class,” said Connan.

The Rhodes University team consisted of Geoff BagshaweSmith, Karen Bradshaw, James Connan, Craig Marais, Akshay Patel and Graeme Schmeldt.

The competition was shot over two 600-shot matches, with the overall winners determined by the aggregate of the two matches. Four of the Rhodes Club members achieved new personal best scores.
