Shoplifter arrested

-

A female suspect in her mid-40s has been arrested by members of the Grahamstown Cluster highway patrol. She faces a charge of possession of suspected stolen property.

Grahamstwn Police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, said the patrol received information about a blue VW Polo containing people who had been previously identified as criminals who move from one clothing store to another shoplifting. The group was spotted in High Street and the SAPS were alerted. The suspected vehicle was then sighted in Hill Street and pursued into a parking area.

The passenger door was open and the woman, who had been in the front seat, was laying out new clothes on the ground whilst the driver kept the engine running. The woman was arrested by Constable Siyabonga Tunzi. However, Constable Mervin Frans was unable to prevent the male driver getting away as he took off with the door open, leaving his passenger behind. The value of the goods recovered amounted to over R5000. The suspect is due to appear in the Grahamstown Magistrates court soon.
