Treeless Grahamstown?

-

Trees that are very old have been removed completely or have had most of the branches and canopy removed during the past year and again just recently.

On New Street, the University removed a Monkey Puzzle tree (probably about 75 to 100 years old) and a well-established jacaranda (probably 50 or even older) on the grounds owned by them in New Street.

Peppergrove Mall recently did the same to the very tree that the mall is named after – by leaving just the trunk and a few stumps – all because egrets were nesting in these trees. This decimation started with high pressure water being blasted, at night, onto the branches of another tree on New Street.

There must be another method. The colony will move from one tree to the next, so I ask, will all trees in Grahamstown eventually be cut-down?
