Man injured trying to stop looters

People looting shops of foreign nationals assaulted a man who was trying to stop them from breaking in to the United Cash and Carry in Grahamstow­n yesterday (Thursday 22 October).

The group, which was being pushed away from town by police, went to United Cash and Carry to loot. The 30 year-old Extension 6 man, who wanted to remain anonymous, was going home from work. He said that, as he was passing by the store, he noticed that the group was breaking in.

He said he had seen, close to his home, that a foreign national who was renting and running a spaza shop, lost his belongings. The man said that the shop was looted in broad daylight by members of the Grahamstow­n community who broke down the doors. His father told them not to vandalise the property but, according to the man, the crowd was very aggressive and didn’t listen to anything they were told. His father said he was allowing them to come in and take the groceries since he could not do anything to stop them.
