Beware Eskom franchise’ scam

- STAFF REPORTER

Recently Eskom issued a warning about a “phishing” scheme in which criminals claim that Eskom is offering franchise opportunities for the distribution of prepaid electricity vending machines.

The con artists claim that potential distributors would be able to resell electricity at a price that they determine themselves.

Eskom re-emphasised that electricity prices in South Africa are determined by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) and no reseller is allowed to add any mark ups.

Eskom says it urges the general public not to have any dealings with the SA Tendergate website and that it is a phishing scheme.

Eskom wanted to remind people that all business opportunities available from Eskom would be advertised on its own website - www.eskom. co.za.

They said that anyone who comes across incidents of fraud, corruption and irregularities involving the Eskom brand should report these to Eskom’s toll free crime line on 0800 11 27 22 or email investigate@eskom.co.za.
