Swallows‘ tryers awards

- By STEPHEN PENNEY

Aphiwe Gedese was named the Swallows Rugby Club’s Sportsman of the Year at the annual awards ceremony on Saturday.

The awards function took place at the Oval Clubhouse.

Gedese, who hails from East London, has been a member of Swallows for the past three years. While his main position is lock, he has also played flank and eighth-man when required. While he may be part of the forwards, Dansill Bouwer, Swallows chairman, says Gedese is also one of the “fastest members of the 1st XV”.

Gedese has also received a number of ‘man of the match’ awards during the past season, as well as being named ‘player of the tournament’ at the end of the Easter Rugby Tournament. He has also been standin captain on several occasions.

Bouwer said the awards function took place to “recognize not only the top players who performed consistently during the year, but also the officials and supporters who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the club”.

“The 2015 executive takes the opportunity to thank each and every role-player who contributed to the success of the club during the year,” said Bouwer.

He went on to thank the following individuals and businesses for their continued support: Goodwill Featherstone, Jabez Aids Centre, Kurt Solomon, KS Auto Spares, Dianne at Tip Top Butchery, Micheal Daniels Transport, pastor Denver du Plessis, “as well as all those who tirelessly worked behind the scenes – it is much appreciated”.

The Try of the Year award was shared by three players – Gideon Oerson, Heiner- ich Flink and Milo Heathcote, while the Most Improved Player award went to Milo Heathcote.

The Chairperson’s award for distinguished leadership went to Hinerich Willemse. See the full list of award winners in Know the Score on Page 24.
