Bright designs for new Beaufort Street bins
A project to place new street bins in Beaufort Street is expected to boost a citywide drive to clean up the CBD and surrounds ahead of the National Arts Festival which starts at the end of the month.
The street bin project is a partnership between the Grahamstown Business Forum and Victoria Primary School.
“Our streets would look cleaner, our parks would look cleaner and there would be less pollution ending up in our oceans if everyone cleaned up where they are,” business forum vice-chairperson Richard Gaybba told a group of Victoria Primary School pupils at the school last Friday.
“And that benefits all of us.” The occasion was the handing over of large metal bins to the school.
The pupils will decorate them, and then maintain them once the forum has placed them in Beaufort Street outside the school.
The bins will be mounted on frameworks for easier emptying.
“We want you to take responsibility for litter in your surrounding area, whether it’s at home or at school,” Gaybba said. “We want you to teach, to show by example about cleaning up our lovely city.”
The girls submitted designs on paper models, and three were selected to receive prizes donated by Dr Davies Optometrists.
The forum plans to have the bins mounted and ready for use by the time the Festival starts at the end of the month. Meanwhile the Creative City #CleanupGtown campaign continues in the CBD, where the GBF has joined forces with Makana Municipality and the Grahamstown Residents Association to clean up streets, green areas and buildings ahead of the start of the National Arts Festival on 30 June.
