Police ready for Fest
More than 80 external police deployments from within the province and other government departments this week arrived in Grahamstown to strengthen security in the National Arts Festival.
Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said there will be additional air support on standby for the duration of the event.
“On a daily basis we will have approximately 30 personnel on foot, vehicle and mounted patrols. We will also be manning five static points, namely at High Street, the Settlers Monument, Church Square, Fiddler’s Green and the Village Green.
“Reports and enquiries can be made there to experienced police personnel under the command of a senior officer. All other venues will be monitored and policed throughout the Festival.
“Road blocks and vehicle check points will be held to ensure the safety of the community and our festival goers. We are working closely with provincial and local emergen- cy services through the safety and events committee platform,” said Govender.
Govender offered the following general safety tips:
• Don’t leave your valuables unattended in a vehicle. Place them in the boot.
• Keep a close eye on your belongings when you’re out, including in a restaurant.
• Do not resist robbery of a phone, handbag or purse. Take note of the clothing, possible age, distinguishing features of the thief and report it to the police.
• Carry as little cash as possible - rather use cellphone banking or Internet transfers
• Cash based traders should vary their routine for depositing cash and should not announce that they are going to the bank.
At ATMs, be alert at all times.·If you see anything suspicious, such as a device attached to the machine, or someone acting suspiciously, cancel the transaction and leave. Don’t let any of your bank cards out of your sight.
