Creative sector for African women

- STAFF REPORTER

The programme of Arterial Network, African Women in Cultural Leadership (AWCL) has a vision:

An African Creative Sector in which all women benefit from full recognition of their capabilities and are able through their leadership to unlock the full potential of the African Creative Sector.

With seed funding support from Africalia, a pilot mentorship programme is under way in Kenya where 10 young aspiring leaders are being mentored by women leaders in the Kenyan Creative Sector.

Alongside the mentorship approach, Arterial Network seeks different streams of activities and various partnerships for AWCL to broaden its reach and multiply its impact on the African continent.

This is what has brought them together to initiate the discussion in South Africa: What are the challenges and the needs for women leadership in the South African Creative Sector?

The round table, titled Empowering Women As Cultural Leaders, will explore challenges, strategies and solutions to capacitate and empower women for leadership roles in the African Creative Sector.

It is part of Arterial Network’s African Women Cul- tural Leadership programme. Speakers will include Lara Foot, Lliane Loots, Jade Bowers and Ernestine White and the discussion will be moderated by Marie Sachet of Arterial Network.

The discussion has no entry fee and will take place at 2pm on Wednesday 6 July at the Monument Restaurant.

The session will interrogate: What is cultural leadership?

Why do women still struggle to access leadership positions in the sector?

What are their challenges and needs? How can women connect and support each other across the continent?

Duration of the discussion is 90 minutes.
