Young performers shine in mus
The 10th Grahamstown National Music Competition, hosted by Rhodes University Department of Music and Musicology was once again an exciting highlight of the department’s concert series.
Brilliant young performers from across the country demonstrated their extraordinary musical skills to an appreciative audience. This year’s performers performed on a wide variety of musical instruments, including piano, vocal and the full spectrum of orchestral instruments (strings, woodwinds and brass). To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the competition, the competition organisers decided to award an additional prize for the best brass performer. This was awarded to Kumkani Kabane, a nine-year-old contestant from East London, who performed magnificently on the B flat baritone. The department congratulates all performers, and in particular, the winner of the most promising Grahamstown entrant, Jessica Benyon, a matric pupil at VG.
