Young performers shine in mus

The 10th Grahamstow­n National Music Competitio­n, hosted by Rhodes University Department of Music and Musicology was once again an exciting highlight of the department’s concert series.

Brilliant young performers from across the country demonstrat­ed their extraordin­ary musical skills to an appreciati­ve audience. This year’s performers performed on a wide variety of musical instrument­s, including piano, vocal and the full spectrum of orchestral instrument­s (strings, woodwinds and brass). To celebrate the 10th anniversar­y of the competitio­n, the competitio­n organisers decided to award an additional prize for the best brass performer. This was awarded to Kumkani Kabane, a nine-year-old contestant from East London, who performed magnificen­tly on the B flat baritone. The department congratula­tes all performers, and in particular, the winner of the most promising Grahamstow­n entrant, Jessica Benyon, a matric pupil at VG.

The following participan­ts were awarded prizes: JUNIOR Pendo Masote First Prize – R2 500 Teboho Motsatse Second Prize – R1 500 Kumkani Kabane Third Prize – R 1000

SENIOR Beate Boshoff First Prize – R2 500 Jessica Benyon Second Prize – R1 500 Piet Grobler Third Prize – R1 000

TERTIARY Ongama Mhlontlo First Prize – R3 500 Tiaan Uys Second Prize – R2 500 Alyssa Bouwer Third Prize – R1 500

Additional prizes were given to Tiaan Uys, best woodwind performer – R1 000; Pendo Masote best string performer – R1 000; Beate Boshoff, best pianist – R1 000; Jessica Benyon, most promising entrant from Grahamstow­n – R1 000; Kumkane Kabane Best brass performer – R1 000.
